Working on iPod Photo support

Monday, February 13th, 2006

After implemented proper iPod Nano support, I’m working on adding the same support for iPod Photo, too. Thanks to new informations that have been added on the iPodLinux.org wiki by other developers, too, probably it won’t take too long.

With the current 0.2.3 release the iPod Photo support is experimental: Photo Database is properly read and written, and small thumbnails are shown. Fullscreen photos on the iPod are still displayed as garbage.

GPixPod finally supports properly iPod Nano!

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

Finally GPixPod 0.2.3 just released on SF gains proper support for the very popular iPod Nano. Tested successfully the creation of a new Photo Database from scratch and its next modification. It has not been tested yet the modification of an already existing Photo Database generated by iTunes, but hopefully also this operation should work straightforward. Please download it from SourceForge and try it!

GPixPod 0.2.2 released with Eject iPod feature

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

GPixPod 0.2.2 has been just uploaded on SF with the addition of the requested Eject iPod feature. The program also checks for the proper disconnection of the iPod (when even the “Do not disconnect” message disappears from the iPod screen) suggesting to apply the required setuid permissions on the eject executable if needed.

Eject/disconnect message

A fast swap/not swap bytes optional argument to the RGB565 image conversion functions has been added for convenience, too.

Waiting iPod Photo/Color feedback!

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

I don’t know yet if GPixPod actually works with Photo and Color iPods. Please report bugs, comments and feature wishlists.

The only supported model is still only iPod video 5G. iPod Nanoes currently only recognize the database structure, with version 0.2.1.

Hoping to convert the highly experimental support to actual stable support soon.

Released 0.2.1 version on SourceForge

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

I have published a small bug fix release on SF that solves proper displaying of generated photo albums on iPod Nanoes. But support is still not complete, thumbnails have problems.

A screenshot of the model autodetection feature added in the 0.2 release. Warning for an iPod Nano. In fact the iPod Nano support seems currently not working at all. Problems are being investigated.

GPixPod version 0.2 released! Important new features!

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

I have added important improvements and new highly experimental features in this new 0.2 version of GPixPod, just released on SourceForge.

The new most important additions are:

  • GPixPod now autodetects the iPod model connected. Proper support is still only for iPod video 5G.
  • Highly experimental support for other iPod models, Nano, Photo and Color has been added. Feedback is very welcome, because I have only my iPod video 5G (when things are not working, please let me have just a Photo Database generated by iTunes (no photos!) for your model, it’s enough!). The code to manage the other models is just guessed. Thus, it’s extremely recommended to do backups of your Photos and of your Photo Database before using this new version of GPixPod with other models different from the last model iPod video 5G.
  • Added New menu action in the GUI to access already existing function to create Photo Database from scratch.
  • Implemented HAL iPod autodetection using DBUS thanks to the great contribution by Abaakouk Mehdi.

GPixPod 0.1 released! First public version

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

GPixPod 0.1 has been released on SourceForge. This is the first public version of my first Python/GTK application.

Finally there is way for organizing photos for GNU/Linux iPod users! Until now, there were very useful applications such as GtkPod, Rhythmbox, Banshee to manage uploading music and videos but nothing for photos. For now, the support is only for Apple iPod video 5G, but after some feedback and support, could be possible to tweak the application even for older models, such as iPod Photo, Color and Nano.

You are welcome to send me comments, bugs notifications, feature wishlist and anything else. Thanks for using GPixPod!
